Why this matters
Many VA benefits and claim reviews require your DD214 or items from your Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). You can request these through the National Archives online tool (eVetRecs) or by mailing Standard Form SF 180.
Time: 10–15 minutes (online)
You’ll need: ID information (e.g., SSN or service number, branch, dates of service). eVetRecs now uses ID.me for identity verification.
Option A — Request online with eVetRecs
1. Open eVetRecs. Type https://vetrecs.archives.gov/s/ in your address bar and press Enter. Click Make a new request.
2. Sign in / verify. eVetRecs may ask you to sign in with ID.me and take a quick “live selfie” for verification.
3. Fill the form. Enter your full name, SSN or service number, branch, dates of service, date/place of birth, and what you need (e.g., DD214, OMPF copies).
Option B — Mail the SF 180 (paper)
1. Get the form. Download SF 180 (Request Pertaining to Military Records).
2. Fill and sign. Complete Section I (veteran data) and Section II (what you’re requesting).
3. Mail to the right address. Use the address list on page 2 of SF 180 or mail to the NPRC. Keep a copy.
Note: If you are filing a new VA claim, VA will request your DD214 automatically, so you often don’t need to request it separately.
